Fostering During the Holidays
Holidays and celebrations are special times for most of us. If you are considering becoming a resource foster parent, or are currently a resource foster parent, you know it’s important to create an inclusive and supportive environment for your new family member. There might be many conflicting feelings that arise around the holidays for both you and the children in your care.
Here are some tips to help you include everyone, including children in foster care in the celebrations.
- Open Communication: It’s essential to have open and honest conversations with your children in foster care about their feelings and expectations regarding holidays. Ask them about their past experiences and any traditions they might have enjoyed. This will help you understand their perspective and make them feel valued.
- Involve Them in Planning: Encourage your new family member to participate in the planning of holiday activities like decorating the house, preparing meals, or choosing activities. Involving them will help them feel like an integral part of the family.
- Respect Their Background: They may come from a different cultural or religious background. It’s important to respect and incorporate their traditions into your celebrations. This could be a wonderful opportunity to learn and grow together.
- Create New Traditions: While it’s important to maintain your family traditions, you can also create new ones that include your children in foster care. This could be something simple like a new holiday game or a special meal that everyone looks forward to.
- Be Patient and Understanding: Adjusting to a new family and new traditions can be overwhelming. Be patient and understanding if they need time to adapt. Offer reassurance and support and let them know it’s okay to feel a range of emotions.
- Celebrate Small Moments: Sometimes, the small moments can be the most meaningful. Celebrate the little victories and milestones with your new family member. This will help build a sense of belonging and create positive memories.
- Seek Support: If needed, don’t hesitate to seek support from professionals or support groups. They can offer valuable advice and resources to help you navigate this transition smoothly.
